Denver Cops Don’t Have Enough Space to Store All the Pot They Confiscate

Even though Colorado was one of the first two U.S. states in the nation to legalize recreational marijuana in 2012, for some reason, Denver Police Department is confiscating more weed than ever before.

And the strange part of this already baffling conundrum is that Denver police stations complain that they don’t have enough space to store their seized loot.

“Prior to the legalization…we received small quantities of marijuana, maybe a couple ounces or a few pounds,” Denver’s Lt. Cliff Carney told CBSDenver. “[Now], we’ll get sometimes 300 to 400 boxes of marijuana at one time on one seizure.”

Where do these huge amounts of weed end up? Oddly, the Denver police stash their confiscated weed in a storage warehouse, and it just sits around getting moldy—yes, moldy—as shown in a sad photo provided by the Denver Police.

But their warehouse is getting overcrowded.

As they wait for more storage devices, Carney said his department is now composting illegal pot plants, and it “is saving us quite a bit of money.”

Why, might you ask, are they confiscating and essentially destroying so much marijuana if it is legal to have and to hold in Colorado?

By law, Coloradans can grow up to six plants at home for personal use.

“Because it is now legal in certain quantities, people nowadays believe they can exceed those quantities, and there’d be no prosecution,” Carney explained.

Okay, perhaps there’s a bit of over-cultivation going on in Colorado, which Carney attributes to the problem.

“Instead of 15 to 20 plants grown in someone’s basement, they’re finding 1,000 to 1,500 plants in a warehouse,” he continued.

As for why authorities are seizing more marijuana now than before it was legal, Carney said he can only speculate.
