Tampa Florida Decriminalizes Cannabis

A big change in cannabis policy in Tampa, Florida, possession of small amounts of marijuana have been decriminalized. The mayor of Tampa, Bob Buckhorn, signed an ordinance allowing police officers to fine offenders found with less than 20 grams of cannabis in their possession. This measure was passed with strong support in a 5-1 one vote by the Tampa City Council.

Their hope is that this will help citizens who are forever stigmatized with a criminal record that can prevent them from getting a job, scholarship or even buying a new home. Offenders would be fined a $75 for their first offense, $150 for a seconds and $300 for a third and $450 for all other offenses.

Tampa joins cities like Miami, Palm Beach and other Florida districts that have similar laws.

What the country and certainly mayors have realized is incarcerating people, particularly young people, for a very small amount of marijuana absolutely alters their career path for the rest of their life. Once they get into that prison system, they are forever scarred; they forever have a prison record. – Mayor Bob Buckhorn.
